The Road Back
“James Whale's sequel to All Quiet On The Western Front, long withheld because of expiration of literary rights, is now virtually a lost film. It marked the turning point in Whale's career; while it followed the enormously successful Show Boat, it coincided with a new economy-minded management taking over at Universal. It was interfered with, an opening montage was added to prevent offending Hitler, and thereafter Whale was demoted to programmers. With all its flaws (and a weak cast is one of them), it's still a powerful film and Whale's last real prestige film.”
