“A remake of a silent melodrama amazingly in the Tod Browning-Lon Chaney manner. As a talkie it was designed primarily to introduce Edward G. Robinson and Claudette Colbert to the sound screen, and was shot in Paramount's Astoria, Long Island Studios - giving Florey the chance to experiment in bizarre ways, and to utilise strange Germanic sets. In many ways a crude production, with technical expertise not matching directorial inspiration, but a fascinating film from that strange transitional period.”
