The General Line (The Old And The New)
Eisenstein's first (and only completed) film on a contemporary subject, The General Line was begun in 1926, interrupted by the production of October in 1927 and by official interference in 1928, and finally released in 1929. The film was made in support of the mechanization and collectivization of agriculture, and tells of the initiative and courage of a peasant woman struggling against superstition, greed and hostility. Eisenstein's most neglected masterwork, The General Line is seldom shown today, and never in a print like this one from the collection of Francis Coppola.
