A great Hollywood literary adaptation distinguished by Laurence Olivier's memorable portrayal of Heathcliff and brilliant atmospheric photography by Gregg Toland: not everyone prefers Sam Goldwyn's upbeat ending to Emily Bronte's, but aside from the final scene, the screenplay remains faithful to the gothic spirit of its source.
