Waiting For Fidel
Waiting for Fidel is not the film that Michael Rubbo was expected to make when he went to Cuba in 1974 with Newfoundland's fiery socialist ex-premiere Joey Smallwood and Canadian millionaire Geoff Sterling, to film an interview between Smallwood and Fidel Castro. The interview never took place. Nevertheless, Rubbo made a film, which New York Times critic David Denby described as “a highly inventive and at times excruciatingly funny document about self-deception and the limitations of curiosity.” See Steve Dobi's interview with Michael Rubbo reprinted in this month's feature article for the story behind this film.
