Portrait of Teresa
In Wheeler Auditorium
Admission: $2.50
Currently playing to capacity houses in Havana, this is one of the biggest commercial and critical successes of the New Cuban Cinema. A crisis between the husband and wife in a working class marriage provides the focus for a dramatic examination of the Cuban nuclear family and the profound changes in this area that have been generated by the Cuban revolution. In addition to the increasing incorporation of women into jobs with social and political responsibilities, Portrait of Teresa also reveals the traditional attitudes and emotional reactions which threaten the health of the couple's relationship as well as their own development as individuals. Daisy Granados, who also starred in Memories of Underdevelopment, gives a memorable performance in the title role of the estranged wife. Pastor Vega's Portrait of Teresa is a living picture of Cuba today, of men and women who face real limitations and difficulties in building a better society for themselves.
The film had its U.S. Premiere in September at the Telluride Film Festival, where it was wildly acclaimed by audiences and critics, and will go into major release in this country in a few weeks.
