“For more than four decades, the National Film Board of Canada has provided this continent with a constancy of excellence in short film production. In the animated film particularly, its contribution has been appreciated world-wide. When independent animation was largely dormant in the United States, their artist-in-residence Norman McLaren circumnavigated the realm of possibilities in experimental methods of creating image and sound on the film-strip.
“Whether for cinematic art or pragmatic communication, the quality of design and variety of graphic styles of their work has been as divers and open as the country itself. The NFB has made welcome the talents of many nationals such as: Zlatko Grgic of Yugoslavia, Paul Driessen of the Netherlands and Caroline Leaf of the United States.
“As an expression of Canadian consciousness, it is within their animated shorts that it is perhaps most candid. Beneath the self-deprecating modesty of the ‘moose-'n-mountie' humour lies the calm strength of firm accomplishment and isolated sanity.
“Producer, director and writer Derek Lamb is responsible for most of the films in this program, especially his Academy Award nominee Every Child. Born in Great Britain, he has taught influentially at Carpenter Center at Harvard, and his accomplishments in promoting Canadian animation are beyond counting.”--Anthony Reveaux
