Julio Bressane was a leader of the “underground” grouping within the Cinema Novo movement in Brazil during the sixties. By age 23, he had made 6 features, most shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm for release. Killed The Family, his second and possibly best feature, was shot in 2 weeks. Taking off from the premises of yellow journalism, Bressane presents violent incidents from everyday life in Brazil - murder, suicide, torture - and juxtaposes them with highly personal flights of cinematic fancy, and idiomatic paraphrases of silent films or old musicals.
