One of the most successful of the New Bulgarian Films, both at home and abroad, The Goat Horn is based on a story by one of Bulgaria's leading writers, Nikolai Haitov, who specializes in tough, folk-nationalistic descriptions of the life and customs of rural Bulgarians in past centuries. The Goat Horn narrates a story of rape, murder and revenge, taking place in the 17th century during the period of Turkish occupation. With only a few lines of dialogue, director Medoti Andonov manages to narrate a ten-year saga, focusing on a goat herder and his preparations to avenge the rape/murder of his wife by a group of Turkish marauders. He brings up his daughter, who silently witnessed the savage assault on her mother, as a boy, training her as a warrior.
