According to Andrew Sarris: “Gary Cooper as the elitist, swaggering, superman- master builder is a parody of the Ibsen-Shaw prototypism and it follows that he looks better than he sounds. Cooper and Patricia Neal, catalyzed by Vidor in this wild swipe at ‘collectivism,' project the kind of idealized sexuality with which only a Rand or a Riefenstahl could properly identify.”
