Dinner at Eight
Perhaps the best MGM all-star attraction, and a near-masterpiece of ensemble comic acting: as the principals in the George S. Kaufman-Edna Ferber story of the incidents and intrigues surrounding a posh dinner party given by a New York social climber (Billie Burke), Wallace Beery as a vulgar magnate, Jean Harlow as his guttersnipe wife, John Barrymore as a destitute matinee idol, and the great Marie Dressler as a decaying grand dame, all give tour-de-force performances in one of the most entertaining films of the thirties.
