Almost single-handedly, Pauline Kael has kept alive the reputation of this delightful depression comedy set in the newspaper world. In one of her many references to the film, she writes: “In the early 20's, fast, dirty and cynical comedies exposed the corruption in journalism, politics, and morals. In this satire, based on the rise of Walter Winchell, Lee Tracy (nobody was better at the art of timing and placing a wisecrack) has a pet peeve, a young crooner, Dick Powell....”
