“A personal assessment by Cacoyannis, himself a Cypriot, of the aftermath of the Cyprus tragedy. It details the events leading up to the war and goes on to interview some of the victims and the island's leaders: testimonies of rape and ruinous displacement; charges and counter-charges reveal the complexity of the bleak situation. Archbishop Makarios makes a strong contribution and his entrance is impeccably staged as, over a radio announcement of his own death, the urbane priest steps over a threshold of his bombed palace.”
