Artist's Talk: Amalia Mesa-Bains
Join us for an engaging, illustrated talk by Amalia Mesa-Bains as she illuminates the sources and stories behind her wide-ranging multimedia practice.
The California artist is recognized as one of the most prominent voices and ground-breaking artists in feminist Chicanx art and in feminist art of her generation more generally. Throughout her long artistic career, Mesa-Bains’s examination of pivotal historical moments for Latinxs and her feminist perspective have informed her innovative reconsiderations of sacred forms such as altares (home altars), ofrendas (offerings to the dead), descansos (roadside resting places), and capillas (home yard shrines). In addition to her pioneering altar-, desk-, and laboratory table–based installations, this retrospective exhibition includes her lesser studied handmade books and palimpsest prints.
Following her lecture, Mesa-Bains will autograph copies of Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory, the major catalog for her retrospective exhibition, which will be on sale in the Bakar Atrium.
