Please join us for FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE GALLERY: Latin American Art Curated by Graduate Students, a conversation with Lynne Kimura, Carmel and Howard Friesen Collections Engagement Associate and Academic Liaison, about BAMPFA’s latest curatorial collaboration with UC Berkeley graduate students. 
 
The exhibition Present Tense: Five Centuries of Colonialism in Latin American and Caribbean Art is part of BAMPFA’s series of exhibitions from the permanent collection organized with UC Berkeley classes—and the first to be organized remotely. Seven graduate students—members of a seminar co-taught by History of Art Professor Todd Olson and Spanish and Portuguese Professor Ivonne del Valle—researched, selected work, found images, and wrote labels for this exhibition, all from the comfort and distraction of their homes. Much of the work, both historical and contemporary, has never before been on display in the galleries, so this is a wonderful opportunity to view this compelling work for the first time through the lens of important issues, such as environmental degradation, economic inequities, and attempts to erase traditional cultures.

Lynne Kimura has worked at BAMPFA for twenty-five years, focusing on connecting the museum’s collection with UC Berkeley classes and students. She has a master's degree in Japanese cultural studies from Yale University and did her undergraduate work in Asian Studies at UC Berkeley.

This event is open to Curator’s Circle members at the $1,000 level and above. Space is limited, and reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Registered participants will receive an email with a secure event link on March 19.
