Beginning in November the Weekend Video Screening program will present a selection of videotapes organized by the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. Chosen by Everson Video Curator Richard Simmons, the tapes in this anthology reflect the range of work produced by independent videomakers during the last few years. Simmons has divided this selection of thirty artists into four broad categories encompassing abstract imagery, electronic space, documentaries (including portraits), and narrative/ performance works.
Artists' tapes to be screened in the Museum Theater on Sundays throughout the coming months include those by Nam June Paik, Ed Emshwiller, Phil Morton, Bill Viola, Nancy Cain, Ira Schneider, Juan Downey, John Keeler and Ruth Rotko, Les Levine, Hermine Freed, John Orentlicher and Tom Sherman, Christa Maiwald, Lawrence Weiner and Howard Fried.
The Everson Museum of Art's Video Department was the first museum program to concentrate on the collection and exhibition of artists' work in television. This exhibition, supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, is a continuation of a series of exhibitions and traveling programs initiated in Syracuse in 1971.
